Piercing

A viral video showing a young girl visibly distressed while having her ears pierced in a mall in the United Kingdom is being investigated by local police.

The clip was shared across social media earlier in the week, after an onlooker filmed the uncomfortable situation.

A young girl was documented loudly shrieking while being held down on the floor of a jewellery store chain by two adults, as another pierced her ears. In the clip, the girl can be heard shouting "get off me" and "no" as the incident occurred.

After backlash to the video on social media, South Yorkshire Police in the north of England confirmed that they would be investigating it.

The latest update was shared online on October 19, with the police tweeting: "We have now traced the person who posted the video of the girl having her ears pierced in Meadowhall. Thanks for sharing our appeal. Officers are continuing with their enquiries."

Although the video was posted on October 18 by a Twitter user, it is reported to have first been shared to a personal Facebook page.

The popular tweet read: "Absolutely disgusting behaviour from your staff yesterday afternoon in your Lovisa store. Advising grandmother and mother of a young girl how to restrain and hold her down so they could pierce her ears despite her screaming and pleading! THIS IS ABUSE!"

PC Craig Crew of the Meadowhall policing team told media outlets: "We have watched this footage and understand why many viewers find it concerning. My team and I are now carrying out enquiries with the staff at the store to understand the full circumstances of what happened."

The video was met with a chorus of disapproval online, who felt the girl should not have been held down or had her ears pierced against her will.

Meadowhall, the mall where the video was filmed, addressed concerns from shoppers online in a series of tweet replies, writing: "Our team picked this up with Lovisa as soon as the footage was brought to our attention, and we are working closely with both Lovisa and the police."

A spokesperson for Jewellery store Lovisa told the BBC: "We are reviewing the details of what happened in our Meadowhall store on Sunday October 17. We take these matters very seriously. In order to protect the privacy and health and safety of our team and customers we refrain from further comment at this time."
